The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have blossomed into an immense and wide-reaching franchise – and with the latest movie by Michael Bay the group has once more leapt into the public eye. But have you ever wondered about the TMNT’s past? Not the past of the show (where you have turtles and some radioactive sludge – the recipe for super heroes), but the start of the franchise.
In 1983, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird came up with the idea, first as a light-hearted joke – but one that they very quickly found had the potential to capture the hearts and minds of millions. The franchise is now more than thirty years old and it has all the history, comics and television shows you’d expect – so here’s to hoping the new movie reinvigorates interest in not only the franchise, but its history and heritage.
