There is a new beach craze going around in the eastern part of Shandong province in China. If you walk along the sandy stretch of Qingdao beach you’ll find both men and women garbed in full body suit that covers their whole body, and what is more interesting about these is the upper part of their swimwear, a ski mask that covers the face. There are holes which appropriately leave the nose, mouth and eyes exposed. This new trend has been called facekini by the netizens, and has attracted quite a number of interested beach-goers who seem to have a word or two about this new swimwear evolution.

Originally, this was created as a protection for Chinese bathers, a not so discrete way of avoiding sunburn, but it turned out that it also proved quite useful against insects and jellyfish sting. This beach wear fashion started as a DIY garment using fabric scraps, but now they are sold in shops and swimwear stores for 15 to 25 yuan or about $2.50 to $4 each. So, next time you visit a Shandong province, be sure to get a facekini for yourself.
